McCarthy River Tours (MRT) is the leader in Single & Multi-Day River Trips and Glacier Hiking in McCarthy, Alaska & within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is seeking qualified applicants for the upcoming season. Founded in 2010, McCarthy River Tours offers small group size River Rafting Trips from 4 hours to 14+ days through Class II to Class V whitewater, Glacial Lake Stand Up Paddleboard/Kayak Tours & Day Glacier Hikes on the Root & Kennicott Glaciers as well as bicycle, crampon and kayak/SUP rentals. Our mission is to offer the best in the industry rafting and adventure trips by concentrating on guest experience, high-quality equipment, local history, locally sourced foods and materials, and focus on the Alaskan Wilderness Experience. We emphasize the guest experience by focusing on Safety, High Quality, Authenticity & Exceptional Customer Service.

Our primary focus is to enjoy the rivers of Wrangell-St Elias National Park (WSENP) & Alaska. We are proudly the first Outfitter in WSENP to offer our guests dry suits, helmets, paddles, and High Float Type 5 PFDs. All Employees are expected to complete a Swift-water Rescue Course, MRTO Guide Training, and hold CPR and advanced first aid certifications.

Our Clientele consists primarily of Independent Travelers and Small-Group Van Tour Affiliates with the occasional large group tour and Cruise Ship passengers. Our guests travel from all over the world, mainly from within Alaska, the contiguous United States, China, Europe & Israel, and are drawn to Alaska’s wilderness & America’s largest National Park.

THE EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE

We feel our employees are our greatest asset; our goal is to provide a first-rate guide experience that encourages professional growth. Our River Campus houses all of our guides on the banks of the Kennicott River at the take-out point of our day raft trips; our staff often ‘commutes’ home by boat.

On-site housing for full time summer staff is available at our Kennicott River Campus. Staff are assigned a private living space either a wall tent, A-Frame or river hut.   A “Guide Hut” functions as the staff kitchen and crew hang-out area. Verizon is the only national cell phone carrier that works reliably in McCarthy; both voice and data are available. We have a phone available for outgoing calls and internet is supplied at our operations office.

Every employee is required to obtain Swift Water Rescue, Wilderness First Responder &AED/CPR certifications. We organize a great Swift Water Rescue class at the start of the season.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

We are looking for people dedicated to the summer work experience and the know-how to balance work and play. While we are primarily a rafting business, we also offer Glacier Hikes and other outdoor experiences. We are a close-knit crew and look for team members willing to do a wide variety of tasks, including rafting, kayaking, Glacier Hikes, Office Shifts, Gear Maintenance, and Work Projects. Our preferred candidate has experience in leadership, organization, superb customer service & is self-motivated. While we all love to have fun during the hot summer days, employees who know how to keep on task and be organized with varying supervision succeed most with us.

GETTING HERE AND GETTING AROUND

We organize pick-up in Anchorage for all employees on a set hire date and shuttle to McCarthy; when your season concludes, we will also organize travel dates back to Anchorage for you. You are welcome to bring your vehicle if you like; we have parking on our River Campus.

When you are here, we have numerous bikes on our campus, and you are free to use any of them.

Rafting, Kayaking, Hiking, Glacier Hiking, Ice Climbing, Mountaineering, Friday Community Softball, Annual Story Telling Festival, Flightseeing, Gardening, Movie Night, Pretty much anything you could want to do in the Outdoors!
